Music Picks

"Music is the last refuge for the nihilist"--Curt Kirkwood

Music has been an important diversion in my life. It has helped me get through some tough
times....Rock n' Roll saved me! OK, that's an exaggeration but you get the idea....

Music Picks (in alphabetical order)

Tori Amos  From the Choirgirl Hotel Ok, I had a hard time picking which Tori album to put on here cuz they're all good.  I put Choirgirl on here cuz it's the most recent.  But any will do.  Pele is the most challenging tho...
The Beatles  Abbey Road I like this album so much I have a T-shirt with a picture of the Abbey Road cover on it.
Bjork  Debut Her first solo album....She reminds me of an elf or a faerie or SOMETHING.  Her voice is just amazing!
David Bowie  Changesbowie His greatest hits, all of em...Good stuff.
The Cure  Wish I really love this album...High, Friday I'm in Love, A Letter to Elise.  The list goes on.
Ani Difranco   Living in Clip Her live album.  Her studio albums are really good too, but she's at her pinnacle live.
Bob Dylan  Greatest Hits He can't sing worth a flip, but he's all about lyrics.  They're poems, really.
Maggie Estep  Love is a Dog From Hell Not many people have heard of Maggie which is a shame.  She's a poet-turned-musician and her stuff is just indescribable.  You gotta hear to believe.
Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits Stevie Stevie Stevie
PJ Harvey   Rid of Me She's a present day Patti Smith.  She has all the rock n' roll themes of love, lost, and God...
Hole  Live Through This Courtney is what rock is missing now...ROCK STARS.  Even if you don't like her scandalous behavior, you should be able to enjoy this album.
Janis Joplin  Greatest Hits I don't even think I have to explain this one.
Madonna   Erotica It's probably her least critically acclaimed album she ever made...and it's my favorite.  Go figure.
Sarah McLachlan  Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Everyone loves this one.  If you don't, you're a freak.
Joni Mitchell  Blue Joni doesn't lie...yeah
Nine Inch Nails  Downward Spiral When Trent came of age in my eyes.  This whole album is great to play really loud in your car.
Nirvana  Unplugged in New York This was released after Kurt's death.  It gives me an eerie feeling when he sings "No, I don't have a gun" in "Come as You Are".
Pavement   Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain They're supposedly a "skater" band, but I compare them more to college a band, like REM.
Liz Phair   Exile in Guyville Catchy hooks, witty lyrics, it's what song writing is supposed to be.
Pixies   Doolittle If there was any band I wish would get back together, it would be the Pixies.
Pulp   This is Hardcore Jarvis Cocker sounds like David Bowie.  That alone is enough for me.  But no, great song writing also.
Radiohead   OK Computer This is an ideal example of a concept album.  Take notes.
Sleater-Kinney   Dig Me Out Lesbians playing catchy punk songs.  What else do you want?
Patti Smith   Horses She has a fascinating voice, and even though her lyrics are surreal, you understand every word.
The Smiths   Singles There's two types of people: those who are Smiths fans and those who are not.  Look at yourself in the mirror...which one are you?
Sonic Youth   Daydream Nation Experimental rock, baby.
Talking Heads  More Songs About Food and Buildings Next to David Bowie, I think Talking Heads are one of the first real 'alternative' bands.
Throwing Muses  Throwing Muses Odd songs with dark moods...
U2  Achtung Baby It's U2's greatest...very urban, subway, and European.  I love Bono's lyrics too.
Velvet Underground  Best of... I take it back..The Velvet Underground were the first alternative group ever.
Violent Femmes  Violent Femmes Yeah, this has "Blister in the Sun" on it, but that's like the worse one on it.  They are more than just "Blister in the Sun"!!!
